About the design: Pikas spend the summer collecting vegetation, drying it in the sun, and bringing it underground as a food stock for winter. They do not hibernate but spend the cold season below ground, subsisting on their harvest and waiting for the snowpack to recede. When I painted this watercolor illustration of a pika dreaming of clear and beautiful summer days in the Cascade Range, I was definitely thinking about how rare and precious such days are in the face of climate change, and how crucial it is to hold on to hope that easier days will arrive.
